Bulbophyllum tuberculatum
Plant: tight clumps of oval pseudobulbs. Leaf hairless, 30 x 3mm. Flowers: 2 or 3 off-white with orange labellum. Seed capsule tawny with maroon, warty ribs, about same size as pseudobulb. Flowering: April to May. Habitat: sparse in lowland kauri or podocarp forest on large trees, often high in the canopy. South to Nelson. Conservation: very local and often overlooked; nationally uncommon, not threatened. Notes: forms scattered small clumps on the same tree. Distinguished from B. pygmaeum by its small clumps of significantly larger hairless leaves that stick out from the tuber. Key features: Small clumps of bulbs with a hairless leaf sticking out from the stem. |
