Caladenia alata Plant: to 10 cm tall, leaf lax to 10 cm. Flowers:usually solitary, white to pink or pale mauve, internally (disc) with cerise bars. Two rows of orange topped calli to midlobe base; midlobe curled under and orange tipped, often with an orange marginal callus on each side. Flowering: August to October. Habitat: open manuka scrub. Mainly Auckland northwards with an outlier on Rainbow Mountain. Conservation: uncommon, but locally abundant, not threatened. Notes: early flowering compared other similar Caladenia. Key features: orange tip to labellum, often curled under; variable flower colour - usually white but from pink to deep red, often at the same site. |
