Corybas cryptanthus Plant: usually leafless and completely buried in debris or moss as a white mass of roots in the litter, plants lack chlorophyll even in the leaf. Flowers: translucent white, usually red flecked, with long thin petals and sepals. Flowering: July to September. Habitat: deep litter and debris; often with C. trilobus or C. cheesemanii. Widespread. Conservation: can be locally common, not threatened. Notes: Easily confused with C. cheesemanii in fruit. Best located in November or December when the leafless seed heads are above ground; marked and revisited next season. Key features: white flower buried in the surface litter. |
