Plant: often less than 10cm tall with fewer than 10 tiny green flowers.

Flowers: about 2.5 mm long. Dorsal sepal short, evenly rounded. Lateral sepals usually pointing straight down. Labellum oblong, the margins with few shallow indentations; anterior callus often not prominent, basal calli large, squarish and almost full width of labellum, their tops almost flat.

Flowering: December to February.

Habitat: montane to alpine open short grass turfs, or boggy areas, streamsides, lakesides.

Conservation: locally common; not threatened.

Notes: usually grows at higher altitudes than M. unifolia.

Key features: few flowers with a squat labellum a large callus and almost straight, pendant lateral sepals.
