Pterostylis silvicultrix Plant: to 30 cm tall. Juvenile plants with broad oval to elliptic leaves; flowering specimens have a basal set of broadly-ovate or elliptic leaves 25–60 x 20–25mm, and then upright, narrow pointed leaves; Flowers: large flowered sepals often curled, somewhat truncate, overall dark to dull green, labellum broad, twisted at the tip, reddish at the tip. Flowering: November to December. Habitat: usually in shaded forest, often under Dicksonia fibrosa, but usually in more open forest and restiad bogs. Conservation: not threatened. Chatham endemic. Notes: P. silvicultrix has been confused with P. montana but is larger and the leaves more oval. Key features: Chatham Is species, large flowered, labellum, broad twisted at the tip, lateral sepals curled forwards. |
