Thelymitra malvina Plant: tall, slender to 60 cm tall. Flowers: mauve to blue, petals and sepals large, narrow, opening wide. Column tall narrow, blue to mauve, strongly arched forwards, almost tubular, shaped like an inverted scoop. Top purplish brown, with a broad round, yellow tip. Column arms with tufts of mauve cilia. Habitat: peaty wetlands, often on rotting kauri logs. Flowering: October to November. Conservation: usually solitary; recent arrival, coloniser. Northland only. Notes: distinctive large blue flowers with arched column top. Key features: mauve flowers, tall narrow column strongly arched forwards. |
