Townsonia deflexa Plant: tiny, up to 10cm tall, from a creeping rhizome. Leaves of two types: a stalked round leaf with crinkled margins rising from the rhizome and an elliptic, and a similar stalkless bract about half way up the stem. Flowers: greenish gold, translucent, to 5mm wide. Dorsal sepal and labellum broad, lateral sepals longer and keeled, petals very short and upright. Flowering: December-January. Habitat: high rainfall areas, in deep mossy montane to subalpine beech forest and scrub. Ruapehu southwards. Conservation: scattered in alpine places, locally common but somewhat solitary; naturally uncommon. Notes: easily overlooked. Key features: small size, alpine habitat, round leaf. |
